ისტორიული თელავის ცენტრალურ ნაწილში მდებარე ღვთაების ეკლესია შემაღლებულ ბორცვზე დგას და მაღალი ზღუდე-გალავნით ესაზღვრება ქუჩას. სადა იერის მქონე, თითქმის შეუმკობელი სამნავიანი ბაზილიკა გვიან შუასაუკუნეებშია გადაკეთებული. ტაძრის ძირითად მოცულობას დაშენებული სამრეკლოს თაღოვანი ფანჩატური მე-19 საუკუნის დანამატია. ეკლესიაში დგას რუსული საეკლესიო ტრადიციის ხატებით გაწყობილი კანკელი.
ამ ეკლესიის დაარსების შესახებ ძველი გადმოცემა არსებობს. ისტორიულად გორა, რომელზეც ეკლესია დგას ეკუთვნოდა ყორჩიბაშ რუსიშვილებს. ერთ დღეს ჩვეულებისამებრ თავადი რუსიშვილი ამოსულა ტყეში სანადიროდ. ნადირობა თურმე მარჯვედაც გამოსდიოდა. ნადირობამ იგი ისე გაიტაცა, რომ შეუმჩნევლად ტყეში შემოღამებია. შებინდებისას რუსიშვილს სახლში დაბრუნება უნდოდა, მაგრამ ნანადირევის წაღება ღამით უცხენოდ შეუძლებელი იყო, არც ტყეში უპატრონოდ დატოვება უნდოდა მისი, ამიტომაც მოუხდა ტყეში ღამის გათევა. როდესაც თავადს ჩაეძინა, თეთრწვერა მოხუცი გამოეცხადა და უთხრა: „ადექი, მოთხარე მიწა იმ ადგილზე, სადაც წევხარ, წმინდაა ეს ადგილი,. მიწაში გამოქვაბულია, სადაც ასვენია ღვთაების ხატი, შენს თანამოძმეთ გადაეცი, რომ წმინდანი მიწაში არ ამყოფონ, ააშენონ საკადრისი ეკლესია და თავის საკადრის ადგილას დაასვენონ ხატი”. შინ დაბრუნებუმლმა თავადმა მოხუც დედას უამბო სიზმარი. მეორე დღეს მსახურები და ქალბატონი ტყეში წავიდნენ, იქ, სადაც ღვთაების ხატი ესვენა, ხატის წინ, პატარა შანდალში ორი წმინდა სანთელი ენთო. რუსიშვილმა აღარ დააყოვნა და შეუდგა იმ ტყეში ეკლესიის შენების სამზადისს. ერთ თვეში გამოქვაბულის თავზე ფიცრის ეკლესია ააშენა და ხატი დაასვენა. ეს ამბავი მალევე შეიტყვეს ახლომახლო სოფლებში და უამრავმა ხალხმა დაიწყო იქ სიარული სალოცავად. მალე ფულიც შეაგროვეს და ააშენეს ქვის ეკლესია.
ამჟამინდელი ღვთაების ეკლესია, ცხადია გვიანდელია, მაგრამ მნიშვნელოვანია, რადგან იგი საქართველოში მცირე რაოდენობით არსებული გვიანი შუა საუკუნეების სატაძრო არქიტექტურის ერთ-ერთი ნიმუშია, რომლის ფესვებიც ღრმად მიდის ისტორიულ წარსულში. ეკლესია თელავის ისტორიული განაშენიანების ერთ-ერთი მნიშვნელოვანი ობიექტია.
The Church of the Deity, located in the central part of historical Telavi, stands on an elevated hill and is surrounded by a high fence. The three-nave basilica with a simple appearance was rebuilt in the late Middle Ages. The arched bell tower, built on the main space of the temple, is an addition of the 19th century. The temple has an iconostasis decorated with icons of the Russian church tradition.
There is an old legend about the founding of this church. Historically, the hill on which the church stands belonged to Korchibash Rusishvili. Once, as usual, Prince Rusishvili went to the forest to hunt. He was good at hunting. The hunt captivated him. It was getting dark in the forest. At dusk, Rusishvili wanted to return home, but it was impossible to take a hunted without a horse at night, and he did not want to leave it in the forest too, so he had to spend the night in the forest. When he fell asleep, he dreamed a white-bearded old man, who said:” Get up, dig out the ground you are lying on, this place is sacred. There is a cave in the ground where the icon of the deity rests. Tell to your comrades not to leave the saints in the ground. Let them build a worthy church and rest the icon in its rightful place.” Returning home, he told the dream to his old mother. The next day, the servants and the mistress went to the forest, where the icon of the deity rested. In front of the icon, two sacred candles were lit in a small candlestick. Rusishvili immediately started building a church in that forest. Within a month he built a plank church on top of the cave and rested the icon. About this was soon heard in the nearby villages, and many people began to come there to pray. Soon money was also collected and a stone church was built.
The current Church of the Deity, although late, is important in that it is one of the few examples of late medieval temple architecture in Georgia, whose roots go deep into the historical past. The church is one of the important objects of the historical development of Telavi.
