The Fortress \u201cBatonis Tsikhe\u201d in Telavi is a complex architectural complex, which was the residence of the kings of Kakheti in the 17-18 centuries. In the second half of the 18th century, the residence of King Erekle II was located here, and the Telavi royal house was the political center of Kartli and Kakheti kingdom. In addition, it was of great military importance, as evidenced by the architectural appearance of the monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The architectural complex of Batonis Tsikhe is the only preserved royal palace in Georgia. The architectural complex includes: The palace of the kings of Kakheti, the church of Erekle II, the church of Archil, the gate of the fortress, a bathhouse and a tunnel on the territory of the castle. According to historical sources, Kvirike the Great (1010-1037), the first king of the united Kakheti and Hereti, \u201cmade Telavi as the palace and throne of Kakheti and Hereti\u201d. The construction of the architectural complex of \u201d Batonis Tsikhe \u201d is divided into two stages. In the first stage of construction (1667-1675 \u2013 Archil\u2019s reign) the Erekle II Memorial Palace (Palace of the kings of Kakheti), the eastern gate and the bathhouse were built. In the second stage of construction, which covers the second half of the 18th century, the church of Erekle II, a wall with round pillars at the corner and a west gate were built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complex \u201cBatonis Tsikhe\u201d has an elongated, uneven rectangular shape in plan. It is surrounded by a high wall built of cobblestone, typical for the Kakheti architecture of the late Middle Ages, which covers an area of up to 3 hectares. According to historical sources, the architectural complex \u201cBatonis Tsikhe\u201d was not only a dwelling ensemble of kings, but also had a great military purpose \u2013 this historical wall protected the city from invasions during the reign of King Erekle and served as a reliable means of protection for the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The territory of the complex was divided into two parts \u2013 west and east, which is preserved to this day. A vast section of the west, it can be assumed that it served as a fortress-wall. Its area is more than 1.5 hectares, which indicates the existence of a royal ensemble here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the central part of the eastern section of the architectural complex of \u201cBatonis Tsikhe\u201d there is a one-storey palace of the Kakhetian kings, which is the main building, standing independently in the architectural ensemble. The oriental-style palace, decorated with wide stained-glass lancet windows, is close to a square in plan. It has a rectangular living room and five small rooms with corridors. The interior of the palace was painted in ancient times. The uniqueness of the palace, in addition to its architectural appearance, lies primarily in the historey of its construction. The historey of the construction of the Palace of the Kings and the issue of dating has been studied by many scientists. According to T. Aldamidze\u2019s opinion, the palace was built by the Muslim ruler of Kakheti and considers him to be David Imamkulikhan, who began to rule Kakheti in 1703.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modest appearance of the Royal Palace reflects the morals and customs of the Georgian royal dynasty. In 1801, the Telavi Palace, as the residence of the Georgian kings, was abolished. In the 1860s, under the leadership of Anna Chavchavadze and Gr. Orbeliani, the building of the palace was transferred to St. Nino Women\u2019s Charity Organization, hereinafter St. Nino school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Batonis Tsikhe in Telavi, with its architectural and historical features, is a remarkable monument of cultural heritage. This is the most important building, as it is one of the few surviving examples of palaces in Georgia, due to which it has the status of a monument of national importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
