Church by the name Gvtismshobeli ( St. Mariam) belongs to the XIX century. The orthodox church used to stand in its place before. The temple was inactive, concequently prayers and church rituals were strictly banned during the Soviet period. At that time it was used as a warehouse and for other purposes, not paying attention, as a result of which, in 1948, the dome of the temple was destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Georgia, the Church by the name Gvtismhobeli (St.Mariam) was cleaned, repaired, roofed and again became a place of worship for the Orthodox parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brick central-domed church is located at the beginning of the most ancient part of Telavi, on Cholokashvili Street. The temple stands on uneven terrain. According to the plan, the church is of cross type with an elongated axis from east to west. The eastern arm traditionally ends with a semi-circular apse of the altar. The under-dome space is crowned with a dome with twelve windows, resting on four independent pillars. On the upper tier of the western arm of the church there is a balcony, where the worshipper can get by stairs arranged on both sides of the entrance to the church. The decoration of the facades of the church with elongated proportions is the composition of relief crosses and arched systems made of bricks. Fragments of sky-blue colour plaster were observed on the northern and western facades. Cross-domed Church of the Virgin \u2013 stylistically is one of the most striking examples of church architecture of the late Middle Ages, built of Kakhetian brick. Exquisite proportions and artistic design of the facades make it one of the outstanding buildings of brick temple architecture.
